Greater Manchester Police say they’re still looking into an incident at a cemetery in Oldham which saw a car smash a number of gravestones.

Oldham Council described the incident at Greenacres Cemetery on Friday 21st June, as ‘reckless, shocking and appalling’ and promised to work to fix the damaged stones.

It was at around 2pm when the car, a stolen Audi A4, burst through the gates of the cemetery before driving over a number of graves and stopping while resting on a number of headstones.

Police say they’re still searching for two people seen in the car at the time of the incident, they both fled the scene a short time later.

The car was abandoned at the scene but so far no arrests have been made and officers are continuing to appeal for help in tracking them down.

Speaking at the time of the incident Councillor Ateeque Ur-Rehman, cabinet member for Neighbourhoods Services, said: “This is a reckless, shocking and appalling incident and show a complete lack of respect for our community, the deceased and their loved ones.”

“I know our dedicated team of officers who look after the area will be devastated as I’m sure many residents will be.”

“We’ll be working hard to repair the damage as quickly as possible and ensure the cemetery is put back to the calm and peaceful place of rest it has always been.”
