A man has been left with minor injuries after walking in on a robbery at a supermarket in Tameside while the robbers were demanding staff lie on the floor.

Police were called to the McColl’s store on Ashton Road in Newton, Hyde at around 9.45pm on Monday night (24th June) after reports of two balaclava-clad men entering the shop and carrying out a robbery.

It’s thought the two men were dressed in black.

They demanded staff open the safe but after they were told the employees didn’t have access to it, they shouted for them to get down on the floor while they ransacked the till and the tobacco section.

As this was going on a customer walked into the shop and confronted the two men, one of whom punched him in the face before the robbers fled the scene.

The customer was taken to hospital having suffered minor injuries.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log number 2404 of June 24, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
