Rochdale’s search for a first home win of 2019 continues thanks to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Coventry City which plunged Dale closer to the relegation zone.
In a first half devoid of many good chances, Dominic Hyam had the best opening, latching onto Liam Kelly’s chip over Dale’s defence leaving Hyam will little to do other than have a shot on target but he scuffed his shot and watched the ball dribble into the hands of Andy Lonergan in Rochdale’s net.
After the interval Amadou Bakayoko went close to opening up the scoring but couldn’t convert Luke Thomas’ cutback.
Callum Camps then came to the home side’s rescue, diverting a shot just the right side of the Dale’s post and out for a corner.
It took until the 68th minute for the deadlock to be broken.
Jordy Hiwula-Mayifuila raced onto a through ball, collecting Bakayoko’s flick-on before keeping his nerve to complete a cool finish beyond Lonergan to give the visitors a lead they wouldn’t surrender.
They nearly made it 2-0 shortly afterwards when Thomas weaved his way towards goal before shooting but Lonergan was able to make the save.
The defeat keeps Rochdale in 18th in League One but only a point above the relegation zone with all but one of the teams below them having a game in hand.
Next up for Keith Hill’s men is a visit from AFC Wimbledon on Tuesday (19th February).
