After going winless in January, Rochdale are already off and running in February, notching their first win of 2019 and moving out of the bottom four in the process thanks to a 2-1 win at Walsall.
Dale had two of their new recruits to thank for the victory as Ethan Hamilton and Ethan Ebanks-Landell combined for the two goals, snapping the club’s six game winless run and heaping more misery on their hosts.
Rochdale didn’t mess about, taking the lead after only four minutes at the Bescot when their corner fell to Ebanks-Landell with the defender wasting not time in lashing the ball into the back of the net.
The Saddlers were level just after the half hour mark thanks to a fantastic individual effort from Joe Edwards. He won the ball in a tackle on the halfway line before striding forward before finding the bottom corner of Josh Lillis’ net from the edge of the penalty area.
Both sides entered halftime level, but Rochdale had their noses in front once again just fifteen minutes after the restart.
This time it was Ethan Hamilton’s turn to go on a run with the Manchester United loanee surging into the box before showing composure in rolling the ball into the goal from 15-yards out.
Despite Walsall ramping up the pressure in search of their second leveller, Rochdale were able to hold out, Jim McNulty clearing off the line and Josh Lillis saving in the process of notching up their first win.
It means Dale jump to 18th in the League One table, two points clear of the relegation zone with Coventry City next up at the Crown Oil Arena on Saturday (9th February).
