Rochdale remain winless in 2019 after Barnsley defeat

Rochdale’s winless start to 2019 has continued despite taking the lead at Barnsley on Saturday, eventually losing 2-1.

It means Dale are now without a win in all competitions since they beat Blackpool on Boxing Day and sit just one place and one point above the relegation zone in League One.

Goals from Kieffer Moore and Cauley Woodrow saw Keith Hill’s men off after Ian Henderson had given Dale the lead shortly after halftime.

Keith Hill had asked for an improved performance from his team and in fairness it was the visitors who had the better of the opening exchanges with Callum Camps slicing his shot wide of the mark from the edge of the area.

Ryan Delaney came closest of all to breaking the deadlock prior to halftime but his shot whistled over the crossbar.

When the game resumed it was Rochdale’s ever reliable captain who would give them a deserved lead.

Jimmy McNulty’s quick freekick beat the offside trap and found Henderson who didn’t need a second invitation to slot home from close range.

However, that seemed to wake Barnsley up and they were level just five minutes later.

Kieffer Moore drilling a shot into the bottom corner of Josh Lillis’ net from outside the penalty area.

It was 2-1 15 minutes from full time thanks to Cauley Woodrow as Jacob Brown beat his man and squared the ball for Woodrow who made no mistake from six yards out.

The defeat leaves Rochdale 20th in the League One table with a trip to Walsall next on the fixture list on Saturday (2nd February).
