As speculation continues to surround Oldham Athletic and who will be their next manager a surprising name has risen to the top of the betting with bookies placing current defender Peter Clarke among the favourites.
The 37-year old former Blackpool and Huddersfield Town centre back is currently in his second spell as a player at Boundary Park but is being tipped by many to replace Frankie Bunn who was sacked hours after the club lost 6-0 at Carlisle United.
It would be the former Everton trainee’s first taste of management at any level and could see him either retiring from playing the game or take the role on as player/manager until at least the end of the season.
However, Clarke isn’t the only name in the frame for the manager’s hot seat at Boundary Park.
Currently the bookies have former Coventry City and Fleetwood Town manager Steven Pressley as the favourite with the likes of Clarke, John Askey, Owen Coyle and Jacques Santini also thought to be interested.
Latics for their part have announced this morning (Thursday 3rd January) that the current caretaker boss Pete Wild will remain in charge of the first-team for the FA Cup trip to Fulham on Sunday with the club still hoping to make “the right appointment as soon as possible.”
